PANTHEON -Carlitos Lunghi Site
The Obelisk of the Pantheon, is one of small, just only
6.34 meters and
was erected by RAMSES II in the pyramidion
are two cartridges of
RAMSES II.
Originally one was outside of the Temple of the Sun in Heliopolis.
According to the Italian archaeologist Antonio
Nibby (1792-1839) this
obelisk is an imitation made during the period of
the Roman rule over
Egypt.
In Rome step to adorn with the obelisk of Villa Celimontana
the Iseum of
the Temple of Isis, but it not known who was responsible for the removed
to Egypt.
In the XVI century it stood in the square of St. Mateos.
At the beginning of 18 century 18, in 1711 by order of Pope
Clement XI
it was transported to his present location, in front of the Pantheon,
adding
itself to the remodeled fountain of the Pantheon, designed
by Giacomo
della Porta, in the square of the Rotonda, causes by some know it
like the
Rotonda obelisk.
In the top was decorated with a cross over
a star, while the base of the
obelisk received inscriptions of the papal coat of arms.
Paint of Bernardo Bellotto, 17 century, where there can see the Pantheon
fontain,
without the obelisk, & the towers make it in the Pantheon by Bernini,
removed in 1883.
